James (Jiggs) Ross Stevenson

James (Jiggs) Stevenson passed away at the age of 67 years on January 8, 2018 in Regina, SK.

A traditional wake was held on Wednesday, January 10, 2018  from the Cote First Nation Band Hall.

A funeral service was held on Thursday, January 11, 2018  also from the Cote First Nation Band Hall.

Interment  followed at the Cote First Nation Cemetery.  

Jiggs  was predeceased by his parents Ethel Severight and Adam Stevenson, brothers; Norman (Chaboy) Stevenson, Alfred Stevenson, Fredrick (Topsy) Severight,  Monigan Severight and twins in infancy, sisters; Pearl, Christina-Rose, Virginia, Evelyn,  Julia and  Daughter; Charlene Bruno.

He is survived by his wife; Connie, sisters; Clara Monroe and Stella Ketchemonia, children; Adam (Leona), Tasha (Eric), Irene (Tyler), James (Jalessa), stepsons; Bradley (Sheena), Dwight (Lyndsay) and Derek (Robin), he also leaves to mourn his passing 19 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren as well as special nephews James (Jimmy) Severight and Brian (Lil Red) Severight ,  special niece Wanda Cote and numerous nieces and nephews that he loved dearly.

Jiggs lived in Alberta as well as Lebret where he worked as a supervisor from 1975 to 1979 before moving home in that year. He served his community as a councillor for 35 years after first being elected in 1980. He managed the Cote Band Store in 1981.In 1984 he coached the Wagon Burners Hockey Team which included a trip to Hawaii. He initiated winter games, along with his brother Alfred and Chaboy (Norman).

While serving as a councillor Jiggs played a major part in creation of Cote Band Farms. He was a tough  negotiator for all Cote Land Claims as well as Mee Mee Lodge, Pickerel Point Campground, Cote Market, Duck Mountain Lodge, Confectionary, Laundry Mat and Marina as well as negotiating housing in 2008. Jiggs also served on the board for the boys group home- Pikiwek. He held the educational portfolio for 20 years.

Jiggs was compassionate to all band members while he was in office. He was famous for his naps (In the hallway) or in his vehicle. One of his passions was watching D.J. play hockey and would attend games any chance he could. He loved all his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Jiggs was a strong traditional man whom took pride in the upkeep of his yard and loved his dogs and cats.
