Mabel Laevens passed away at the age of 99 years on April 23, 2019 at the Kamsack and District Nursing Home.
Mabel Josephine Laevens was born March 29, 1920, in what is now the Bear Stream district near Kamsack, Saskatchewan. She attended Doroshenko, Bear Stream and Kamsack schools in Saskatchewan followed by Paincourt and Grande Point in Ontario. Returning to Saskatchewan in her teen years, she worked in many neighboring homes helping with household chores and new babies. 1941-1945 she worked for a doctor’s family in Ontario and then again returned to Saskatchewan. In 1950, she began her cooking career at the Yorkton Auxiliary Hospital and finished it at the present Yorkton hospital in 1985. Following her retirement,she lived in her home in Kamsack until taking up residence at Eaglestone Lodge in 2012 and then the Kamsack Nursing Home in 2017.
She was dedicated to her family and to her faith, providing continuous and generous support to both throughout her years, especially the CWL. Mabel was predeceased by her parents – Achiel and Mary (Mroske) Laevens, sisters – Frances, Marjorie, Madeline, brother- Lawrence, and brothers-in-law – Percy Breen, Alvin Yaroshewski and Art Barton. She is survived by her many nieces and nephews who were her “Family.” That number increased in her last year with all those at the Nursing Home who caringly referred to her as “Auntie.” Sincere appreciation is extended to all her caregivers on behalf of her family. Donations in Mabel’s name may be made to Eaglestone Lodge or the Kamsack Nursing Home Auxiliary.
Prayers where held on Friday, April 26, 2019 from the chapel of Andrychuk Funeral Home.
A funeral mass was held on Saturday, April 27, 2019 from St Stephens Roman Catholic Church.
Interment followed at the Riverview Cemetery.
