Passed away on Friday, October 7, 2011 in Yorkton,Saskatchewan at the age of 96 years.
Prayers were offered on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 from the Descent of the Holy Spirit Ukrainian Catholic Church, Benito,MB.
Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, October 12, 2011 from the Descent of the Holy Spirit, Ukrainian Catholic Church.
Interment followed in the Descent of the Holy Spirit, Ukrainian Catholic Church Cemetery.
Joe was born in the Vesna District near Arran,Saskatchewan, on October 7, 1915 to John and Wasylana Makohoniuk. He attended the Kobzar School south of Arran. He stayed on the family farm until 1957. Joe married Jennie (nee Hrabarchuk) in 1940 at the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Vesna.
Joe moved to B.C and worked for C N until he could buy his own farm. He then moved to Benito and worked as a carpenter for Johnny Sas. Joe always kept busy; he loved to shovel snow and cut grass. He played the fiddle at many Ukrainian weddings with his own band. He loved the community; "There was no place like Benito", no place like home, everyone smiling, generous, kind and helpful. He survived the depression and the dirty 30's. He worked hard by hand growing up on the farm. He was haying and stooking at the age of 14 years.
Joe was the president & vice president of the Ukrainian Catholic Parish, and was very active for many years.
Joe was survived by his children: Elaine of Benito,Manitobaand John (Lisa) of Smiley,Saskatchewan. One brother; Bill of Regina, Saskatchewan and other extended family.
Joe was predeceased by; parents John and Wasylana; His wife Jennie; sisters in infancy; Jennie, Mary, Sylvia, Anne, Emily and Mary. Brother Mike. Sister in law; Helen Makohoniuk; Brother in laws Dan Hatoley and Mike Hatoley; Nieces; Helen Dick and Valerie White, Nephews; Gary Makohoniuk and John Hatoley.
Should friends so desire, donations in memory of Joseph may be made to a charity of ones choice.
