Mary was born in Whitebeach, Saskatchewan to Anton and Vasunia Kastrukoff. They moved to the Pelly District when Mary was a young child. She went to school in Pelly at the Midhurst School. Mary married John Vanin on December 7, 1941. They started their lives together, and established a successful farm 5 ½ miles east of Pelly. John and Mary retired to the village of Pelly in 1975.
Mary was a member of the Pelly and Kamsack Doukabor Societies and lived by their beliefs of a peaceful life and toil. She volunteered in many organizations in the Pelly community throughout the years. Mary made many lifelong friends through the Pelly Happy Hearts Club, RM of St Philips, and the many conventions she attended with John.
She made their home inviting and always welcomed family and friends. She especially looked forward to the many visit from her grandchildren and nieces and nephews from across the country. She loved nothing better than to have her grandchildren stay with them in Pelly during summer holidays, Christmas and spring breaks.
Mary will be fondly remembered for the delicious meals she prepared, especially her pereshki. She also had tremendous sewing skills and her handiwork of special blankets and pillows grace the home of many to this day.
Mary enjoyed travelling and made sure that she and John took trips to BC, Ontario, Maritimes, Florida, and Hawaii. She enjoyed reading and music. Mary had a vast collection of reading material and was a member of the Pelly Choir. Garden was a passion, and she tended to their vegetable and flower gardens both in town and at the farm, well into her eighties. Mary always had a bountiful harvest of fruits and vegetables each fall.
In her latter years, when she lived in the Eaglestone Lodge, Mary participated in all the activities they organized. She especially looked forward to the choirs and singers who entertained at the Lodge.
A private graveside service took place at the Kamsack Riverview Cemetery. A celebration of Mary's life will be held at a later date.
For those who wish, donations can be made to the Kamsack Hospital and Nursing Home Auxiliary.
