Mike Sas Obituary

On October 29, 2025 at the wise age of 94 years, Mike Sas joined his beloved wife Sylvia for a life of eternity.

Mike was born on September 25, 1931 to Peter and Elizabeth Sas in the Beaver Plains District in Saskatchewan where he also attended school.

In 1950 he attended auto mechanics training in Winnipeg. On July 14, 1951 he married Sylvia (née Sych) and they started their life together in Kamsack. Mike began his career in Kamsack as a journeyman mechanic and was employed in a number of garages. He then worked as a fuel supplier for Imperial Esso, opened the first coin operated carwash and entered into the lumberyard business at Kamsack Lumber. With hard work, the aid of his wife Sylvia, and some excellent employees, he was recognized for his efforts by being presented with the “Lumberman of the Year” award in 1990 by the Western Canadian Lumberman’s Association.

As an avid, self-taught musician, Mike learned to play many instruments but his favorite was the trombone. He put his musical talents to use in a very fulfilling and joyful way, not only for himself but for others. Over many decades he played at weddings, anniversaries, organized a family and friend serenade through the streets of Jubilee sub-division at Madge Lake and also was in the 53rd Field Militia Band. Remembrance Day was one of his favorite times as he got dressed in his formal Legion gear to play with the band and march to the cenotaph to honor those who served our country. Mike was very much dedicated to contributing to his community. He served as Exalted Ruler of the Elks Club and President of the Kamsack Jaycees as well as Vice-President of the provincial Jaycees, and as a Senator for the Junior Chamber International. Mike was a leader that stepped up to help create community events and projects. He chaired a number of summer sports days, rodeos and was an active member of the committees responsible for the development of the Duck Mountain Ski Area in Duck Mountain Provincial Park.

Mike was a man of faith and attending church in Maybridge was where he met Sylvia. When they moved to Kamsack as a couple, they both supported the All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church with dedication and devotion. Mike was president of the district for over 5 decades making it one of his life’s missions to ensure things were taken care of. Whether it was attending church in several parish locations, making the service schedules, organizing meetings, reorganizing the district or physically replacing the church shingles and windows, he was all in, working with other parishioners to bring the tasks to fruition.

With all that hard work, Mike did make time to play. Trips with his buddies to Ski the mountains and fish the lakes, golf with family and friends, family camping trips, playing and watching baseball, bowling, cottage life at Madge Lake & winters in Texas and Arizona. Extensive travel to many countries was also a memorable experience Mike and Sylvia had during their time in the lumber business.

Mike created his life with a solid foundation and passed that onto his children and grandchildren. He is respectfully known for his common sense and logical approach to absolutely everything. He was a magnet for attracting new people wherever he was and with that mindset had developed many life long friends who became family over time. He loved socializing, entertaining and telling many stories of days gone by with razor sharp memory. He will be greatly missed as he touched the lives of so many people. Although it is with sadness we say goodbye to Mike, we know that he is extremely happy to be reunited with Sylvia who he has dearly missed since her passing in Jan 2019. One thing for certain is that the moment they were reunited he would have said “Nu Hello” before giving her a big hug.

Thank you for sharing yourself with all of us, Mike!

May you rest in peace and love for all eternity.

Should friends so desire, donations in memory of Mike may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion - Kamsack Branch 24 or to the Duck Mountain Ski Area.
