On May 7, 2010, at the age of 99 years Nellie Oystryk, entered into God's eternal care. Nellie was born on February 12, 1911, at Venlaw, Manitoba to her parents Onufrey and Maria (Korbutiak) Rurak, who came to Canada from Tropanioka, Galicia, Ukraine. She lived in Venlaw with her parents and brothers and grew up knowing the importance of caring for others and developed a life long appreciation and joy for family, friends, neighbours, her church and the wonder and beauty of nature around her. She enjoyed her lessons at Kolomaya School near Venlaw but had to quit school to help her parents and take care of her younger siblings. The family moved to Verigin, SK in 1925. Nellie worked as a housekeeper for a doctor's family and later worked in his office and drug store.
Nellie met her husband, Nick, at a barn dance and they were married on July 26, 1928 at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in the Rhein District. They were happily married for 60 years. They farmed south of Verigin and upon retirement moved to Kamsack. Mom lived in her own home for a number of years, then moved to Davies Tower and in 2004 to the Kamsack Nursing Home.
Nellie enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, gardening and reading. She was a gracious hostess, a wonderful cook and many will remember the delicious aroma of fresh baked bread, buns, doughnuts and pies and let's not forget the cabbage rolls, borscht and perohi. Mom was a faithful member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and a member of the Women's Association.
She was predeceased by her husband Nick, parents Onufrey and Maria Rurak, 6 brothers, 2 sisters, daughter-in-law Jennie, sons-in-law Ted Miazga and Alex Kominetsky, grandchildren, Janice Gardner, Lori and Adam Miazga and great-grandson Luke.
She leaves to be lovingly remembered by son Stan (Yvonne), daughters Marie (Maurice) Gardner, Liz Miazga and Holly Kominetsky, 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren.
Prayers were held on Friday, May 14 at 7:00 p.m. at the chapel of Andrychuk Funeral Home with the Reverend Father Patrick Powalinsky officiating. The funeral service was held on Saturday, May 15 at 9:30 a.m. at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Kamsack. Interment following in the Kamsack Riverview Cemetery.
If friends so desire, donations may be made in Nellie's memory to the Kamsack and District Nursing Home Auxiliary.
