Richard Whitehawk Sr Obituary

Richard Whitehawk Sr passed away on February 21, 2019 in Kamsack,SK.

A traditional wake was held on Tuesday, February 26, 2019  from the Cote First Nation Band Hall.

A funeral service was held on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 also from the Cote First Nation Band Hall.

Interment followed at the Cote First Nation Cemetery.

Richard (Dick) is survived by his wife of 54 years Madeleine, daughters; Jacqueline Whitehawk – Cook, Annette Whitehawk – Peters, sons; Rueben Whitehawk, Richard Whitehawk Jr and Kim Quewezance, sisters; Violet Singclair of Winnipeg, Esther Monkman of Winnipeg, Gloria Kitchemonia of Calgary, Dorina Whitehawk of Calgary, Arlene White of Calgary, brothers; William Whitehawk, James Whitehawk, Wilfred Whitehawk (Paula), Dwayne Whitehawk (Joan), Lindsay Whitehawk and Harvey Whitehawk.

Richard was predeceased by his parents; Alexander Whitehawk and Hazel Cote – Whitehawk, infant granddaughter; Miley Peters, siblings; Alaine Severight, Eben Whitehawk, Muriel McNabb, Spencer Whitehawk, Freddy Whitehawk, Leona Bingham, Elton Whitehawk, Camilla Whitehawk, Alfred Whitehawk (Tootsie), Geraldine Friday, Clifford Whitehawk, Allan Whitehawk, Ralph Whitehawk and his best friend Norman Stevenson (Chubby).

Richard was a father figure to many young people, when his wife’s family of 6 became orphaned he readily agreed to bring them into his home and care for them. He was involved in raising funds to fight for custody of his grandchildren. He advised and disciplined many nieces and nephews. Because of this they loved and respected him greatly.

Richard received his GED education, received a certificate in Tailoring. Richard used to help his wife sew square dance outfits. He entered the apprentice program and eventually received his journeyman in carpentry. He worked as a carpenter and built many great homes in Badgerville and on the reserve.

Richard was involved in politics and held position as chief for a short while. He has been a councillor for many terms. He enjoyed golfing and often entered tournaments and was successful. He enjoyed horse racing and was often at the local horseracing circuit. He also was a bus contractor and drove bus for 20 years. He enjoyed baseball and fastball. His greatest achievement was to coach the senior Cote Selects for 17 years and during this time they travelled to B.C, Alberta, all over Saskatchewan and Manitoba for many tournaments and usually successful in winning a lot of those tournaments. The Cote Selects were a great team because of his leadership.
