Tannis Strukoff (nee Popoff)
Tannis Strukoff (nee Popoff) of Kamsack, Saskatchewan, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, November 4, 2010, in the Kamsack Hospital, with family at her bedside, at the age of 72 years.
Tannis was born April 26, 1938, in Kamsack, Saskatchewan. She began her education at Smerenie country school, and graduated high school in Pelly, Saskatchewan. She obtained her Standard Teaching Certificate in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in June of 1958. On August 2, 1958, she married Dr. Fred Strukoff, the new chiropractor in Kamsack. They decided to make their home there. After teaching for one year, in a one room country school, she and Fred started their family. She loved her teaching career, but was an even more devoted wife and mother, delighting in raising their four children. She also worked part-time, with her husband and son, at the Strukoff Chiropractic Clinic, and became involved with her greater community. She taught 4-H, served on the local school board and town council, and in various capacities with the Doukhobor Society. She was a voracious reader, a passionate gardener, and a woman of deep faith. She also loved journaling daily, writing poetry, and was a meticulous, self-taught bookkeeper. Tannis will also be forever remembered for her sincere hospitality. She welcomed all phone calls and personal visits from her numerous, dear friends and family members; and she always offered them some of her delicious, traditional Doukhobor cooking or baking before they left her home.
Tannis was predeceased by Fred, her loving husband of 50 years; her parents John and Elsie Popoff; her son David in infancy; her brother Samuel; and her niece Kathryn.
She is survived by her children Fred Jr., of Armstrong, British Columbia, son Dr. Wayne (Gail) of Kamsack, Saskatchewan, daughter Lisa (John) Rhodes of Vancouver, Washington, U.S.A., and son Robert of Swift Current, Saskatchewan; her brothers Timothy (Sarah) Popoff of Smeaton, Saskatchewan, John (Mae) Popoff of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Wesley (Pat) Popoff of Canora, Saskatchewan; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
Prayer Services were held Monday, November 8, 2010, at 7:00 p.m., from the Andrychuk Funeral Chapel, in Kamsack, with Rev. Frances Patterson officiating. Funeral Services (Malenya) were held Tuesday, November 9, 2010, at 1:00 p.m., from the Doukhobor Prayer Home, in Kamsack, with Mae Popoff, sister-in-law, and dear friend to Tannis, officiating. Traditional Doukhobor hymns were sung by the District Choir. Prayers were offered by area Doukhobor elders. The eulogy was delivered by her daughter, Lisa Rhodes. Her son, Robert, did a poem reading. A duet was performed by Keith and Sonia Tarasoff. Her three sons Fred Strukoff Jr., Dr. Wayne Strukoff, and Robert Strukoff; as well as her three brothers Timothy Popoff, John Popoff, and Wesley Popoff served as pallbearers.
Interment followed at the Riverview Cemetery in Kamsack, with fellowship and refreshment afterward, at the Doukhobor Prayer Home.
A traditional Doukhobor six-week Memorial Service (Pominkee) was held at graveside, at Riverview Cemetery, on Saturday, December 11, 2010, at 11:00 a.m., with John Trofimenkoff officiating. Prayers, readings and poems were offered by those in attendance. A meal and fellowship followed in Kamsack.
The following is a poem that Tannis wrote, and read, at her husband Fred’s traditional six-week Memorial Graveside Service (Pominkee):
I watched an eagle in the sky
Its wings were widely spread,
And I felt a stirring deep within
As it circled overhead.
It was then I knew your spirit
Was soaring high and free,
Soaring with the eagles
Yet ever watching over me.
And a sense of peace came o’er me
As God’s message became clear,
Each time I see an eagle
I will feel your presence near.
